Easy Autumn Touches for a Warm + Welcoming Entryway
There’s something comforting about coming home on a crisp autumn day.
Air is cooler, leaves are changing, and suddenly we want warmer colours, softer textures, and a home that feels more cozy. Your entryway is the perfect place to bring some of that autumn feeling indoors.
You don’t need to redecorate or buy a house full of seasonal décor. A few simple touches can make your entryway feel warm, welcoming, and ready for fall.
Here are some simple ways to give your entryway an autumn makeover.
Start With a Seasonal Reset
Before adding anything new, take a few minutes to clear away the clutter.
Put away shoes that aren’t being worn, sort through the collection of coats and bags, and remove anything that has accumulated on your entryway table or bench.
Autumn is actually a great time to give this space an organizational reset. You’re about to start bringing out your heavier coats, boots, scarves, and hats, so having a designated home for everything will make the autumn/winter months much easier.
Think less clutter, more cozy.
Add a Cozy Welcome Mat
One of the easiest ways to make an entryway feel fresh is to change the welcome mat.
Look for something with warm autumn colours such as cream, brown, burgundy, rust, or muted plaid. A simple “Welcome” mat works beautifully, but you could also choose something with a subtle seasonal design.
If you have room, layer a smaller mat over a larger natural-fibre rug for more texture and visual interest.
Bring in Autumn Colours
You don’t have to decorate exclusively with orange pumpkins and bright fall leaves.
Autumn colours can be softer and more sophisticated.
Try incorporating:
- Warm cream
- Camel
- Rust
- Terracotta
- Burgundy
- Deep plum
- Soft brown
- Muted mauve
- Dusty pink
One or two of these colours can make a noticeable difference.
A burgundy vase, a rust-coloured throw, or a few dried leaves in a neutral container can give your entryway a distinctly autumnal feeling without becoming overly themed.
Add Natural Elements
Autumn is all about bringing the feeling of the outdoors inside.
Look around your yard or local area for inspo. Branches in a simple vase can create a beautiful seasonal display, while dried grass, pinecones, acorns, and preserved leaves can add texture.
You could also use a small basket filled with pinecones or place a few decorative pumpkins on an entryway table.
The goal isn’t to fill every available surface. A few natural elements often have much more impact than a collection of seasonal knick-knacks.
Make Room for Pumpkins
We can’t talk about autumn decorating without mentioning pumpkins!
But pumpkins don’t have to be bright orange.
Try white, cream, sage, muted pink, or soft brown pumpkins for a more understated look. If your style leans rustic or farmhouse-inspired, look for natural-looking pumpkins made from wood, fabric, ceramic, or woven materials. Your local dollar store has these kind of pumpkins in stock right now!
A small grouping on a bench, console table, or beside the front door can create a lovely seasonal moment.
Bring in Warm Textures
As the weather cools down, we want softer and warmer textures.
Your entryway can benefit from this too.
Add a chunky throw to an entryway bench or place a small cushion on a chair. A woven basket can hold scarves and mittens, while a textured runner can make a hard floor feel much warmer.
Wood, wicker, rattan, wool, linen, and knitted textures all work beautifully for autumn.
These materials also pair well with rustic and cottage-inspired decorating.
Give Your Entryway Table a Little Autumn Moment
If you have a console or entryway table, this is a perfect spot for a small seasonal display.
You could keep it very simple:
A vase + a few branches + a candle + a small pumpkin.
That’s really all you need.
Try varying the heights of your pieces rather than lining everything up at the same level. A taller vase at the back, a candle in the middle, and a small pumpkin or decorative object toward the front can create a simple but balanced arrangement.
And don’t forget to leave some empty space. Your entryway still needs to function.
Don’t Forget the Lighting
Shorter days are one of the best reasons to make your entryway lighting feel a little warmer.
If your entryway has a table lamp, switch to a warm-toned bulb. If you have a fixture with exposed bulbs, consider using warm white bulbs rather than cool white ones.
Candles can also add a wonderful autumn glow.
A flameless candle on a console table or inside a lantern gives you that cozy feeling without having to worry about an open flame.
Create a Practical Autumn Drop Zone
Autumn isn’t just about decorating. It’s also the start of the season when entryways can become very messy very quickly.
Wet shoes.
Muddy boots.
Raincoats.
Umbrellas.
Scarves.
And eventually, all those winter accessories.
Take advantage of the seasonal transition to make your entryway work harder for you.
Add a basket for hats and scarves, a boot tray for wet footwear, hooks for jackets, or a small basket for umbrellas.
A beautiful entryway is wonderful, but a beautiful and functional entryway is even better.
Add a Seasonal Scent
Scent is an often-overlooked way to make your home feel seasonal.
You don’t need anything overwhelmingly pumpkin-spiced. If that’s not your thing, try softer autumn-inspired scents such as:
- Vanilla
- Apple
- Cinnamon
- Cedar
- Clove
- Amber
- Sandalwood
A candle, diffuser, or wax warmer near the entryway can create a lovely first impression when you walk through the door.
Keep It Simple
The best autumn decorating doesn’t necessarily involve buying more things.
Look around your home first.
You may already have a basket that can go in the entryway, a vase that could hold branches, a throw that could go over the bench, or candles that would create the perfect seasonal display.
Instead of asking, “What do I need to buy?”, try asking:
“What do I already have that could make this space feel warmer?”
You may be surprised by what you can create.
Create an Entryway That Feels Like Coming Home
Your entryway is the first part of your home you see when you walk through the door, so it’s worth making it a space that feels good to come home to.
For autumn, think warm colours, natural materials, cozy textures, soft lighting, and just enough seasonal décor to make the change of season noticeable.
You don’t need a complete makeover.
Sometimes a new mat, a basket, a few branches, and a cozy candle are all it takes to make your entryway feel like autumn has arrived.
And perhaps that’s the nicest thing about seasonal decorating: you don’t have to do everything. You just have to add a few things that make your home feel a little more like you.
